15:31:52<Saul__>I've posted a question at http://groups.google.com/group/HAppS/browse_thread/thread/b1bd707d06055840, please respond
15:56:12<Lycurgus>at compile, let alone execution time, your functions must be sufficiently concrete to actually compile or execute
15:56:57<Lycurgus>otherwise while they could only be conditionally compilable or executable
15:58:00<Lycurgus>the latter would involve exceptions processing for insubtantiated arguments, the former could in principle (but not in haskell) be allowed
15:59:09<Lycurgus>(at least to my knowledge as far as odinary fully compiled haskell is concerned, there's template haskell and the like but not a counterinstance)
16:12:53<Saul__>Lycurgus: Ok
16:13:33<Saul__>Lycurgus: Is there a way to use polymorphic functions for queries and updates in another way?
16:14:03<Lycurgus>no it's of the essence, it's a hard constraint of reality
16:15:22<Lycurgus>i.e, you must as programmer accomodate the real situation by making sure said updates and queries are sufficiently well defined
16:15:52<Lycurgus>with the constraists of the system you're using, happs in this case
16:15:58<Lycurgus>*within
16:16:48<Saul__>Well I get that when I actually use them they must be monomorphic, but I really need to be able to use the same function on various types
16:18:47<Saul__>Since otherwise I'll have to copy all my code for each type I have (which will be over 10)
16:19:06<Lycurgus>sounds like you need to understand either haskell or happs better
16:19:26<Lycurgus>prolly haskell
16:19:39<Saul__>I understand haskell fine
16:23:48<Saul__>If I have a function select :: (State -> a) -> Query State a, and then use that with query $ Select (bla :: State -> Int), I don't see why that wouldn't work
16:24:08<Saul__>except that I can't use mkMethods to get the Select
16:26:03<Saul__>Granted I don't know that much about template haskell, but it seems silly to not allow such an important part of haskell in the query/update functions
16:45:22<lambdapants>hello happy happers
16:45:38<lambdapants>I have a problem.
16:46:30<lambdapants>My vserver sucks too much to compile anything.
16:48:19<lambdapants>Hence deploying my happs app is a bit of a ****. I was wondering if there's any automated approaches been made to this sort of thing, because I am struggling to create a statically linked executable.
17:05:30<stepcut>lambdapants: what OS does the vserver use ?
17:51:31<lambdapants>ha nevermind! I figured it oot
17:51:36<lambdapants>thanks though
19:54:50<newsham>hi
19:57:23<guenni>hi
20:02:22<Lycurgus>"lamdapants" *sheesh*
20:02:30<Lycurgus>*lambda
20:04:59<newsham>lambada
20:05:29<newsham>$ darcs get --partial --tag=0.8 http://happs.org/repos/HAppS-SMTP
20:05:32<newsham>darcs: Couldn't find a tag matching "tag-name 0.8"
20:05:42<newsham>command copy/pasted from happs.org
20:08:04<newsham>should all packages be checked out without tags?
20:34:30<newsham>is it reasonable to use darcs head for happs packages? or should I stick to particular revision tags?
20:34:42<newsham>and if the latter, what tags are appropriate? the ones listed on the website dont all work
20:34:59<newsham>(also are there versions which will work with recent versions of haxml or am I doomed to install an old version?)
20:38:11<newsham>(also, Happs-Util not listed on website?)
21:04:44<stepcut>newsham: I would use the darcs head from happs.org. It seems to be that the development work is done elsewhere, and so the stuff on happs.org is what is considered stable?
21:05:14<newsham>i'm just going to use the hackage stuff i guess
21:05:38<Lemmih>Yeah, use the hackage tarballs.
21:06:29<Lemmih>stepcut: Development isn't done elsewhere, we just aren't doing very much development right now (:
21:07:00<stepcut>Lemmih: ah :)
21:07:08<stepcut>it's been a while since I tried to pull from head
21:07:41<Lemmih>My two months vacation is almost at an end.
21:08:08<Lemmih>Hopefully development will pick up again soon.
21:08:13<stepcut>Lemmih: sometime when it is convenient for you guys, I would like to go over some of the patches I have made and see what needs to be changed and what can be merged. Some of the changes touch HAppS. HSP, and happs-hsp-template, so a bit of coordination is needed.
21:08:57<newsham>what is happs llc up to these days?
21:12:28<Lemmih>It's taking a break. I was off to England and Alex was busy doing whatever it is he's doing.
22:59:55<Lycurgus>you and Alex do the bulk of the current development that makes it into the distribution?
23:08:34<Lemmih>Yeah.
23:19:29<newsham>wasnt shapr doing work with happs?
23:20:50<Lemmih>Yes, he has now moved on to another job.
23:43:00<newsham>ahh
